Having actively participated in the one and only public event held in Greece on the subject of cremation, I have long wanted to visit Ritsona. This wish of mine came true, unfortunately with the death of my mother. Arriving at the point, you see an architectural masterpiece in nature. A relative of mine will characteristically say that it resembles a museum of modern art. I found the parallelism very successful. At the reception of KAN (cremation center) a book is waiting for me with a dedication by my friend and president of KAN, Antonis Alakiotis. Title of the book “23 years for the obvious…”, published by the Hellenic Cremation Society. It contains the 23-year continuous and uninterrupted struggle of Antonis for the obvious, the operation of the first crematorium in Greece. The crematorium is not public but of private interests. The issue became a ball between the state, local government, church, until a private person took it forward. Antonis has a special mention in his book about them. After all, it is still at the same point, since it seems unlikely that we will see a public crematorium despite the occasional announcements to the contrary. The church is a big pool of votes. The process is very simple, yet different from burial. The final farewell is quiet and leaves you to think. The place, the way, the atmosphere allow it. To rationalize the moment, to feel close to the person you are accompanying, to leave him alone for his journey, to go on your own journey. The crematorium is culture. Priceless culture and we owe it to Antonis Alakiotis for sharing it with us, making his personal dream come true. Thank you Antoni for this…
